Two Wigan Athletic coaches will be heading out to Australia this month to further strengthen the link the academy is building with Sutherland Sharks.

Foundation Phase Lead Jay Cochrane and Academy Age Group coach Matt Bebbington will take coaching sessions for youngsters in New South Wales in April.

The link was initially established early in 2018 when Academy Manager Gregor Rioch and Assistant Academy Manager Jake Campbell were invited by Sutherland Sharks’ U20 coach and Technical Director Nick Dimovski, on the back of successfully hosting one of Sutherland’s U16 players at the Academy earlier in 2018.

Gregor and Jake also met Latics’ Supporters Club in Australia for a Q and A and informal meeting which was hugely successful, providing them the opportunity to find out more about the club as well as receive some merchandise.

Since that visit, a number of youngsters from Australia visited the UK in September and October last year, including a trip to the DW Stadium to watch Latics’ clash with Swansea City.

That visit also included training sessions with Latics coaches at Christopher Park and a number of fixtures against teams including Manchester United, Derby County and Burnley.

Assistant Academy Manager Jake Campbell said:

“This unique link which we have established with our friends at Sutherland Sharks has already provided lifelong memories and opportunities to players and staff from both clubs.

“Since Gregor and I returned from an excellent experience in Sydney last April, we have already hosted a number of talented, young Australian players at the academy and conversely, the link has also provided an opportunity for some of our young professionals to further their footballing journey in another country.

“We were delighted to be able to reach out to our club’s supporters in Australia during our visit last year and I'm sure Jay and Matt will get the same level of enjoyment on meeting the supporters club this year.”

Jay Cochrane continued:

“We are so excited to be able to come to Sydney and extend our friendship with Sutherland Sharks.

“Over the last 12 months we have built a great foundation and this trip will see us further that.

“Over the last four or five seasons we have produced several international players and we will be bringing the most focused parts of our methodology which has helped achieve this.

“We can’t wait to share this with the young players on the other side of the world, while having fun together playing our favourite sport.”
