Reach Extended to Breed New Stars

27 October

The successful transition of Sutherland Sharks Football Club's players has influenced the club to break new ground and introduce a new "mini" academy.

The club will thus tap into the start-up end of the biggest football association in Australasia - the 18,000-strong Sutherland Shire Football Association (SSFA) - by providing specialised training for pre-school and 6-8 year-olds. The club, which beat Sydney FC recently with many of their young 17-year-olds playing, came first in the 2011 Club Championship and have gained a reputation as a breeding ground of stars.

The Sharks Football Academy, headed by head coach John Klappas has had many juniors move on to A-League or national standard in the past two years. Since Brendan Gan rocketed on to the scene with Sydney FC, the 2011 Sydney Premier League Club Champions have provided a rich pool of players.

Jack Duncan, a Grays Point junior, was re-signed by the Newcastle Jets and has been selected for the AFC Under 19 Championship Qualifiers in Malaysia.

Andrew Depta, 18, will travel to England in January with the Australian Schoolboys and is trialling in Poland. 17-year-old Hayden Morton, a Miranda junior, has been signed by Central Coast Mariners after representing the Joeys in qualifiers and an exceptional year in the Sharks' first grade side.

Sharks president Paul Smith said the club now wanted to increase their reach to help the very young.
"It is a new initiative, the Sharks Academy extending the nursery's tentacles to the younger age-group. It also fills a gap in the programs run by the SSFA and Football NSW, so we can ensure there is a pathway from the very young through to the seniors."

Sharks treasurer Bruce Lawrence said the fact the club is a community-based 'Not-for-Profit organisation' and has the continuing support from Caringbah businessman, John Hills (from Pipe King) allows the Sharks to offer programs at a reasonable rate. "Hopefully it will lead to more youngsters and more families supporting our top Premier League teams at Seymour Shaw."

Contact Paul Smith (email) paul@sutherlandsharksfc.com.au or (mob) 0408 685 115 for more information about Academy training times and program fees for all age groups.

Other recent Sharks Reps: Joshua Da Silva (17), Daniel Sedaka (17), Lucas Stergiou (15), Joshua McDonald (15), Zac Nicolis (15), Billy Hatznikolis (15), Connor Chapman (15), Marc Warren , Chris Naumoff, Chris Ikonomidis (16), Giancarlo Gallufucco (17).

Sharks U15's League Champions 2011

26 September 2011

Sutherland Sharks FC U15 Youth side capped off a tremendous season by overcoming Bonnyrigg White Eagles in the decider at Seymour Shaw on the weekend.

This was a fine display of direct football as the teams went at each other as if there would be no tomorrow and that provided much entertainment for the good folk in the spectator areas.

The play flowed from one end of the ground to the other but each attacking move was foiled by either some rock-solid defensive play or some fine goalkeeping.

The Sharks found the back of the net in the 30th minute thanks to a strike from Patrick Truman and they were able to take that advantage through to the break despite the best efforts of the White Eagles.

The second half started where the first had left off with the teams continuing to show that they were perfectly capable of producing a very competitive and highly entertaining brand of play.

Sutherland doubled their lead in the 55th minute when James Eldred found the target but Bonnyrigg were far from a beaten team as they continued to search for ways to get themselves back into the match.

The 2-0 scoreline remained in place through to the final whistle.

Sutherland Sharks stepped forward at the presentation ceremony to receive their rewards as Premiers and Champions from Bill Kostandas (Head of Competitions at Football NSW) while Bonnyrigg White Eagles can be extremely proud of their achievements as Premiership and Championship runners-up.

Stavroulakis honoured at Sutherland Sharks Presentation

20 September 2011

Sutherland Sharks’ tenacious midfielder Nick Stavroulakis was crowned the 2011 Sutherland Sharks ‘Player of the Year’ at their annual presentation held at the Tradies Club in Gymea on Tuesday 20th September.

It was the second time in successive seasons Stavroulakis was honoured with this award as the former Australian youth international had a sterling season in what was a solid year for the Sharks.

The 26-year-old was delighted with his award but did state his disappointment at the Sharks missing out on playing a Grand Final after bowing out to Blacktown City FC in the Minor Semi Final 2-1.

“It’s of course an honour to have been nominated for this award but I have to thank the team and Robbie Stanton who have all made this year an enjoyable one both on and off the pitch.

“It has been a pretty tough season and we gave it a good shot by finishing in the top three but of course I am disappointed that we won’t be contesting for that Grand Final trophy this year – that would have been the icing on the cake on what has been a consistent season for us.”

The club’s other major awards on the evening were the ‘President’s Award’ which went to club stalwart and skipper George Souris while ‘Rookie of the Year award was taken out by promising young defender Hayden Morton who has a huge future in the game after a remarkable 2011 year. Ace marksman Matt Bailey ended up as the club’s top scorer and was awarded the ‘Golden Boot’ award.

Blacktown Demons End Sharks Season

17 September 2011

Blacktown City FC continued their march towards defending their 2010 NSW Premier League Championship crown with a very hard fought 2-1 defeat of Sutherland Sharks at Seymour Shaw on Saturday night.

The hosts produced enough efforts on goal to win any other match quite handsomely though the reigning champions are made of sterner stuff, displaying tremendous character, grit and determination to soak up the pressure and eliminate the Sharks from the finals series.

Sutherland made all the early running with Chris Price on the end of a difficult opportunity in the 7’ minute, though the ball wouldn’t drop quickly enough and he was forced to snatch it early as the effort sailed harmlessly over the crossbar.

Blacktown City on the other hand were showing good signs down the flanks, particularly in the first 10’ minutes, however they were unable to turn the Sharks defence to create a clear-cut scoring chance as was summed up by Luke Roodenburg who fired tamely at Nathan Denham from distance.

Panni Nikas was playing the lone striker role for Sutherland with Todd Halloran, Lachlan Cahill and Price supporting quickly from the flanks and centre, however the lack of height was telling with Patrick Gatt and Zac Cairncross dealing comfortably with almost everything delivered into the box.

With 15’ minutes on the clock Halloran was put through after clever lead-up work and Blacktown City goalkeeper Symon Jaeger needed to sprint off his line to block the shot before his defence could clear the danger.

Paul Kohler brought down Gatt and received a heavy talking to from referee Alex Glasgow who was handling the match well in allowing it to be as free flowing as it was.

Dramatic Shootout Sees Sydney United Past Ten-Man Sutherland

10 September 2011

Sydney United overcame a resilient Sutherland Sharks 7-6 on penalties after a cagey 1-1 draw in their Preliminary Semi Final clash at Jensen Park on a chilly Saturday night.

A Luka Glavas penalty late in the first half cancelled out Lachlan Cahill’s opener before Jim Bakis received his marching orders on the hour mark.

With nothing separating the sides at the end of normal and extra time, Hayden Morton’s crucial miss in the shootout proved to be the decider and was the only scar on the young defender’s otherwise stellar performance.

The result means United have earned their shot at Premiers Sydney Olympic next weekend who defeated Sydney FC 1-0, while Sutherland move into an elimination battle with the winner of tomorrow’s clash between Bankstown City FC and Bonnyrigg White Eagles.

United began the match in adventurous fashion, pushing forward early to test George Souris’ well organised defence.

United went close to taking an early lead as Steve Hayes’ solo run unlocked the Sutherland defence and put Luka Glavas through on goal; the 2011 Golden Boot winner’s original effort was bravely blocked by Nathan Denham before 17-year old Morton put his body on the line to block the follow up at the expense of a corner.

Morton was well positioned once again shortly after as his intervention denied Elsid Barkhousir a promising scoring opportunity on the break.

Sharks secure third spot with win at Jensen Park

4 September 2011

Sutherland Sharks capped off a fine home and away season with a 3-2 victory over Bankstown City at Jensen Park on Sunday afternoon.

A brace of goals from Chris Price and a goal to Matthew Bailey were enough to hold off the locals.

In a battle between sides at the top and bottom of the club championship it was an expected outcome for many, but a lot closer than some pundits predicted.

Sutherland scored early with Panni Nikas playing a through ball into Matt Bailey and sending him one-on-one with Zlatko Joseski. Bailey was clinical with the chance and slotted home to put his side a goal up.

Bankstown were not put off by that early chance and tried to play their way out of their troubles. They were led by Hussein Salameh who ran through in the 5’ minute and headed the ball over an advancing Nathan Denham, though Hayden Morton got back to head the ball away from danger.

4 minutes later Salameh was at it again, as he picked the ball up on halfway from a breakdown in Sutherland play and took it into an attacking position. He fired a shot low and across Denham’s body but the Sutherland custodian demonstrated his keeping skills by getting across to a difficult shot.

In the 20th minute Michael Katz flanked Bailey on his right which was enough to take the defence off its main priority of stopping the progress of the ball. With the half-chance created, Bailey turned and shot instead of laying it off to Katz but Bailey’s shot was just off target.

SYDNEY FC GO DOWN TO HUNGRY SHARKS

31 August 2011

NSW Premier League side Sutherland Sharks bounced back to form with an emphatic 3-0 victory against Hyundai A-League outfit Sydney FC in front of a healthy crowd of 2,000 last Wednesday.

Sydney FC had the likes of Ivan Necevski, Sebastian Ryall, Michael Beauchamp, Hirofumi Moriyasu, Mark Bridge, Dimi Petratos, Shannon Cole, Juho Makela, Rhyan Grant and Bruno Cazarine in their line up in what was the first loss for Vitezlav Lavicka’s men in their pre-season trials. All three goals coming in the second half which enthralled the home Shire fans and pleased their coach Robbie Stanton who played a number of youth players along with his senior members.

“It was an impressive win with the NSW Premier League Finals Series in a week’s time”, Stanton commented. Youngsters Patrick Savor , Klim Gjoreski, James McKenzie, Tyson Rhodes, Michael Stuart and Tom Gollins all acquitted themselves well in top company.

The visitors started strongly, holding possession well, but it was Sutherland who had the first shot on goal when Ivan Necevski made a great save from Chris Price in the 9th minute. Within two minutes Juho Makela and Petratos had fashioned chances, which were saved by Nathan Denham.

The 2,000 strong crowd came alive early in the second half when Gjoreski launched another of his attacking raids to skillfully get in behind the Sydney FC defense. The result was he was brought down in the penalty box and former North Queensland Fury midfielder Panni Nikas converted a penalty in the 47th minute. Sydney brought on the experienced Bridge and Cazarine while coach Stanton brought on rookies Stuart and Gollins.

It was the Sharks Sutherland who doubled its lead in the 70th minute when a thunder bolt 30m shot from youngster James McKenzie beat Necevski pointlessly as it rocketed into the net. Cazarine came close to pulling a goal back in the 82nd minute when he ran onto a Bridge through ball but his shot was well blocked by Shark’s keeper Nathan Denham . Sutherland lived dangerously from the ensuing corner when a goal-bound shot from Sebastian Ryall was cleared off the line.

Sutherland finished the scoring in the 90th minute when the shark’s under 20 player Tom Gollins dispossessed a Sydney defender on half way and sprinted goalward. Unselfishly he drew the keeper before passing to Lachlan Cahill who made no mistake. It was to be the final moment of the match which the Shire based side proved too strong on the evening with notable performances from McKenzie, Gjoreski, Denham, Nikas, and Stavroulakis.

Wolves stun Sharks at Seymour Shaw Park

28 August 2011

South Coast Wolves came to Seymour Shaw Park to face Sutherland Sharks knowing they couldn’t attain a Top Five position this season, though Trevor Morgan’s men returned to the South Coast with maximum points following a very strong showing.

In the 4’ minute Mark Picciolini attempted an audacious bicycle-kick that never made contact. Less than 60’’ seconds later, Sean Robertson rocked the Sharks when having an initial shot blocked by Nathan Denham in the home goal but netted the rebound to give the visiting Wolves the early lead.

Matt Bailey almost replied within a minute but a last-ditch tackle cleared the danger in a very enterprising opening period.

Chris Price sent over a teasing cross from the left to be met by the head of Bailey but not able to gain enough height the ball sailed harmlessly over the bar as Sutherland fought back strongly yet looked a little disjointed in the opening 20’ minutes.

Five-star Bonnyrigg Steamroll Sharks

20 August 2011

Bonnyrigg White Eagles confirmed their top-five placing with an emphatic 5-2 defeat of Sutherland Sharks at Bonnyrigg Sports Centre on Saturday evening.

Played at a fast-pace on a slippery surface, Bonnyrigg put together their best half of football this season over the first 45’ minutes, illustrated by Jared Lum’s hat-trick.

The Sharks best efforts to re-open the contest were confirmed early in the second-half as Todd Halloran made it 2-3, before Brad Boardman and Brendan Gan completed the five-star performance.

The White Eagles had captain Chris Tadrosse at his best in a sensational performance by the left-sided defender, meanwhile Brendan Gan, Nathan Elasi and Alexander Canak looked the goods in the attacking third.

Youngster Jared Lum was clinical with his finishing for the White Eagles, a most impressive sign for Bonnyrigg in the run into the finals series.

The Sharks week wasn’t a positive one with news of Yianni Fragogianis being ruled out for the season. The young left-sided defender will undergo an operation on his ankle following scans last week.

Sharks forced to battle Suns for Win

15 August

Sutherland Sharks kept the pressure on the teams above them on the NSW Premier League ladder with three very important points in their 1-0 victory against Rockdale City Suns on Saturday evening.

Despite the win, the Sharks did not have everything go their own way with the side forced to fight until the end to secure the win over the Suns

A somewhat fortuitous finish, rounding off good work down the Sharks’ left flank, where Yianni Fragogianis slipped the ball through to Chris Price who beat his marker and centred for Huseyin Jasli, who appeared to overrun the ball only to flick it beyond the despairing dive of Dion Shaw to give the home side the lead on 6’ minutes.

It was the only goal of the game although enough chances were created throughout to win a dozen.

Sharks and Stallions Share Points

7 August

Sutherland Sharks are always one of the more difficult opponents to face in the NSW Premier League and Marconi certainly found that out at home on a wet Sunday afternoon.

However, after taking the lead the Stallions may have thought they were destined for all three points until a late penalty provided the Sharks with the equalising goal.

It was a penalty that left Marconi’s coach Luke Casserly shaking his head. After the game he could not hide his disappointment at not managing to secure all three points.

Sharks beat Sydney United in Finals Series dress rehearsal

30 July

Sutherland Sharks continued their positive run of form, and results, to defeat Sydney United 1-0 at Seymour Shaw on Saturday evening.

In arguably one of the best 90’ minutes of football this season, both sides expressed themselves with some very neat passing across the park – a fine reflection of the high level of football played in the NSW Premier League this season.

In the end, a rather fortuitous deflection from a Chris Price strike early in the second-half proved the difference for the Sharks.

A fairly even opening saw both sides exchange passages of play with a hold of possession in midfield as the Sharks pressed via the feet of Nick Stavroulakis and Panni Nikas with the Reds looking to Steve Hayes and Ufuk Talay to pull the strings out of the middle.
